Rhino, Hippo, Elephant & Giraffe
When it comes to these large species from Africa, it seems that everything concerning them moves in slow motion, including skinning, fleshing, salting drying, shipping to the U.S. and the tanning. Each of these steps must be completed before your trophy can be delivered to the taxidermist for mounting. In many cases, this takes one to two years and sometimes longer, from the time a hunter is in the field and harvests an animal of this size until the tanning process is complete. A process that can be very frustrating for the hunter who anticipates seeing the mounted animal in his trophy room. One great advantage to a faster tanning process is the taxidermist will have a better and fresher skin to work with after tanning, which results in a higher quality mount for his customer.
Speed and Quality
Being a hunter myself and knowing how important my trophies are to me made me stop and think. What can be done to reduce the time at the tannery? Even though I have no control over many factors which add to the lengthy delay for hunters, I wanted to reduce time where possible. I made it my mission to implement a new system that will significantly reduce processing time at the tannery for these large skins. To my knowledge no other tannery or fur dressing company in North America has been able to expedite large skins from Africa on a regular basis. Quality Fur Dressing is now consistently tanning these large items with no additional cost to the customer at an extremely fast pace typically unheard of in the industry.
New Equipment and New Process
By implementing this new process, it has required huge changes at the QFD plant. In the past, all large skins have generally taken about six months for processing. In order to facilitate the processing of such large skins, additional equipment was purchased, not to mention the hiring and training of new employees which added to our staff. These large hides are moved from place to place by a forklift in our 20,000 square foot facility. Some of these life-size skins can weigh over 400 pounds each before rehydration and can be an inch thick. Very few tanneries are equipped to handle such items, making options for the taxidermist very limited. Skins of this size are handled each and every day at Quality Fur Dressing.
Fast Return
Now that new equipment and personnel are in place our team has reduced the processing time for the rhino, hippo, elephant and giraffe to a short 60 days. News of exceptionally fast return of these species is quickly spreading throughout the taxidermy industry. Take advantage of this fantastic tanning service. Your customers will thank you immensely.
